Description

Gustave Baumann Tulips (detail), 1930 Brought from Germany to Chicago as a boy, Gustave Baumann (1881–1971) became responsible for his family's support; he worked at an engraver's and discovered an affinity for printmaking. He took night classes in art and accumulated enough money to study block printing in Munich. Back in the United States, Baumann lived on the sales of his prints. In his thirties, the impulse to wander struck him. His travels brought him to New Mexico in 1918; he found a lifelong home in Santa Fe. For over fifty years Baumann captured the crystalline light and rich colors of the Southwest with affection and subtlety. - INDIVIDUAL ITEM RRP £1.99
